JUNE 2026

Most travelers visit a Farmers Market expecting seasonal fruits and vegetables, artisanal baked goods, jams and locally sourced honey. After walking the entire market, I realized that produce was only part of the scene. The real experiences were all waiting to be discovered with vendors and their products.

I visited the Market on the last three Saturdays of their season before summer break.

– The first visit showed me the different neighborhoods inside the Market as I made a list of vendors I wanted to meet.

– The second introduced me to the photographic challenges of diffuse natural lighting.

– During the third visit, the Travel EXPERIENCE kicked in. And I woke up…

Every Farmers Market tells the story of its community.

Fresh produce, local musicians, artists, family businesses and friendly conversations all come together to create an experience unique to that destination.

As travelers, our role isn’t simply to photograph what is for sale, but to preserve the traditions, personalities and moments that give a location its character. That’s when Travel Photography connects to tradition.

During my second visit to the Farmer’s Market, I arriced early to spend time shooting produce without the crowds. I walked the market auditioning for streaks of light. The sculptural green peppers, a group of iridescent ‘honey sticks’ and a sizzling rice video were perfect. Never underestimate the value of being an Early Bird when on-location. Your images will thank you…

No matter where your travels take you, there will always be open-air markets full of local culture. In Scottsdale, I made it a point to compliment vendors and express appreciation for their efforts. When I bought something, it meant something.

Most travelers spend their time photographing the destination. Curious travelers explore its edges…

On my third visit, I heard banjo music drifting across the street from the Farmers Market. I simply followed the sound. That decision led to an unexpected encounter, and a song composed on the spot. I tipped my appreciative new friend, and came away with an indelible Farmer’s Market memory. Not fresh fruit. Not fresh vegetables. Just the music…

So the next time you Travel, don’t stop inside the destination…EXPAND THE PERIMETER. Special moments are waiting for you to find them. Blues and Arizona honey…

“Nice Kitty…”   –  Sphynx, Farmer’s Market

> Did the cat have any reaction to your smartphone?

Dan:  “Absolutely not. I may not remember every tomato I saw that morning, but I’ll never forget the sphynx that ignored a photographer trying to capture its portrait. Eyes never blinked…”

> Why did you make return visits to the Market?

Dan:  “The first visit taught me the layout and vendor neighborhoods. The second challenged my creativity. By the third visit, I realized a Farmers Market is about much more than photography—it’s about slowing down and enjoying new friendships.”

> How did you know which vendors to spend time with?

Dan:  “I didn’t know anyone. I came looking for Arizona honey. And one friendly recommendation led to another. Curiosity has a funny way of introducing you to people you never expected to meet.”

> What unexpected moment do you hope your friends ask you about when they see your travel photographs and videos?

Dan:  “Without question, the blues musician. A few minutes of conversation, a tip in his open banjo case, and suddenly I had a new friend who wrote me a song. Those are the moments that stay with you long after a trip is over.”

Watching someone run the table is entertaining. In Travel Photography, learning to make the shots yourself develops confidence one shot at a time. Each month, I’ll leave you with three simple techniques from the Farmer’s Market you can practice immediately before your next travel adventure. Rack em…

Thank you for allowing me to be part of your photographic journey.

Every trip you take will present challenges, surprises and opportunities that nobody can predict. But I hope you are beginning to understand something important:

CREATIVITY is not reserved for professionals. It belongs to anyone willing to slow down, evaluate a scene, capture a moment and give viewers something special to experience.

Never underestimate what can happen when “Ordinary Moments Become Meaningful.”

Safe Travels. See you next month…
