IN PHOTOGRAPHIC STORYTELLING – THE JUICE IS IN THE DETAILS
Each car has a face and a personality to go with it. As a photographer, how you shoot each car will either celebrate that personality or ignore it. Low camera angles are all about aggression and power. Elevating the camera changes the conversation to Style and Grace. Cars want to show you who they are. Reveal their personalities with great shooting technique. Viewers will be drawn into the scene…

SHOOT WHAT’S BEHIND YOU
I was made aware of this opportunity one late afternoon at Tempe Town Lake after several hours of futility. Everything was perfectly washed out. As per habit, I took one final look behind me, down the coastline before leaving.

And I see this dissolving horizon, disappearing by the second. I had time to position four shots on the run before the yellow streak was gone. Mother Nature had gifted me with a special lesson on the reality of Life. Two emotions, coexisting side by side.

SEIZING THE MOMENT
Every photographer has experienced the heartbreak of missing transcendent shots by seconds. And those memories linger forever… Never Hesitate.

WHEN THE PINK DRESS MET THE SUNSET
This is a cinematic story of one photographer shooting another photographer shooting his subject. Walking across the Mill Avenue Bridge at Tempe Town Lake at sunset, a car swerves into a drop-off lane and stops. I continue walking and see the next wave of cars entering the bridge.

I hear voices, stop, and turn around to see
a car with flashers on and the sunset hitting this shimmering model. All I had to do was quickly compose, wait and shoot…

BE AVAILABLE
And yes, this is how magical moments are often presented to the photographer who makes him/herself AVAILABLE. Exposing your talent to your immediate environment will bring the amazing world of photography right in front of you.  Like the Van Morrison song, there will be “Days Like This”… Smartphone time.

STORYLINES WITH A PURPOSE

This is a photographic timeline for a real-world process called ‘Value Engineering’. Stripped down, V.E. produces building construction cost estimates before the actual design/engineering are complete. From the creative side, this folding corporate booklet with double pockets and cards represented a metaphor from the world of pottery.

Even back then, I used photographs to tell stories… back in the age of dinosaurs before smartphones roamed the earth.

2 BE A MOVER NOT A SHAKER

This image was taken at the Orange Sky Restaurant in Scottsdale during a set from a friend of mine, Amy Faithe. Needless to say, her piano player had his groove on. Yes, the new iPhones have amazing lens technology. When it comes to musicians, everything looks better up-close…

5. BE A CONTROL FREAK

An environmental portrait shot for a local business magazine. The editorial focus was telling stories about entreprenurs. In this case, the entrepreneur owned a designer furnishing business. Transformed as the ‘Maestro’ of the Eclectic Chair Orchestra…

6. STEP INTO THE LIGHT

This shot was taken at the Mission San Xavier two hours south of Phoenix. We scouted the perimeter just before sunrise and found this view through the service yard that framed the mission towers. Often the best views are never obvious. Just wait for Mr. Sun…

7. CELEBRATE THE DETAILS

The Optima Camelview Village is an award-winning 700 unit mixed use development with multilevel landscaped gardens and water features. The sun creates moving reflections that bounce between terraced buildings. Pay attention. Look down…

8. CATCHING MOMENTS

High school graduation night at the Mesa Art Center in Arizona was an excellent opportunity for the enterprising smartphone photographer. Kids in formal wear are all focused on their group shots and impressing their dates. I became an observant parent with a smartphone…

4 FRAMING THE PITCH

This image was captured during pre-game warmups. Ran out on the field, shot 3 exposures and ran off. The horizon line was intentionally angled. Not textbook straight. And yes, the Rules of Composition are sometimes made to be broken. Batter up…

9 CAVE CREEK ARIZONA

Cave Creek Arizona has all the trappings of a wild west cowboy town. Small tourist stores, BBQ patios, artist studios and live music bars. These hammered metal TRex sculptures were roaring to be photographed. Used a smartphone cartoon filter. Hollywood…

10 AMAZING DAYS LIKE THIS

Bisbee, Arizona is an old mining town turned artist community. Perched on a range of steep hills, this place  worships corrosion. Especially when it comes to vehicles. The rust on this ’57 Chevy was selectively sanded and clear coated with pride. Drive-in worthy…
