Some of my earliest lessons in Visual Composition didn’t come from a camera at all — they came from hoeing long bean rows with my brother on my grandpa’s farm in Iowa. Watching Grandpa Carl paint scenes of small town rural life introduced me to the quiet power of visual storytelling long before I ever held a camera.

Those early days taught me something simple but lasting: “Meaningful images often begin by paying attention to ordinary moments…” Our most treasured personal photographs were shot by someone else. Play Them Forward…

BACKGROUND – As a licensed architect, I spent years studying how light, proportion, and structure shape the way we experience spaces. Architecture, photography, and graphic design all share a common language of composition and balance, and that training continues to influence how I frame images today. Even now, when I raise a camera, part of me is still thinking like a designer — looking for the relationships between light, lines, and the story unfolding within the scene.

PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHY – Later, as a freelance magazine photographer, I worked with architects, contractors, and interior designers to document the character and craftsmanship of their projects. Those assignments eventually led me into designing print advertising where photographs often served as visual metaphors — images that told a story at a glance. Learning to build those visual stories became a powerful bridge between photography and communication, and it continues to influence the way I think about images today.

PLAYING IT FORWARD – Over time, I realized that the most rewarding part of photography wasn’t simply capturing images — it was helping others discover that they could do it too. My mentoring style is built around shared exploration, observation, and practice in real environments, where students learn not just what to photograph but how photographs happen. Watching someone experience that “aha” moment, when everything suddenly clicks, is still one of the most enjoyable parts of the journey.

BUILDING CONSTRUCTION – Believe it or not, a kitchen blender filled with debris from an on-site construction dumpster served as the inspiration for thIs break from the ordinary. I was fortunate to find the right client, and we taok that break together.

AD TEXT – “Place all managerial ingredients in the glass container. Don’t overfill. Blend until smooth and bake in well-greased estimating pan at 350 degrees for 40-45 minutes. Cool on rack and top with nutritious public relations butter icing, Remove and cut into squares. Serves one highly motivated client.”

MAGAZINE FREELANCE – In addition to Architecture and Construction, “Environmental Portraits” was a monthly feature for a local business magazine. Blending business with storytelling…
